Residence/Studio of Man Ray
8 rue du Val-de-Grâce

Man Ray's home/atelier after 1929 (by which time his works were very popular & he enjoyed a certain notoriety), a site close to his beloved Montparnasse (and Kiki, the famed artists' model).

Although it is very interesting to see the site where the great photographer experimented on his Dada works/"Rayographs"/experimental movies, the actual sight of this modernist, concrete Bauhaus structure is truly ugly and uninspiring to any aspiring artist.

Every time I see the scene in Amélie of the young Amélie photographing cloud "images" I am reminded of Man Ray's work of the same (yes, this was one of his actual experiments) derived from Leonardo da Vinci's belief that one should find images in the improbable: fabric patterns, water stains, clouds.

Located in the southwest corner of the 5th, just around the corner from the 14th arrondissement, and down the street from the Chapelle du Val-de-Grâce. Try to go during the daytime as this area is a little too quiet and out-of-the-way for this single woman's taste. In the evening, go to Johnny Depp's bar/nighclub, Man Ray, to try to discern the dadaist's influence on this modern place!

Also nearby is the site where Thornton Wilder wrote most of the Bridge to San Luis Rey.
