St. Spyridon's is the most famous church on Corfu. It was built in 1590 and replaced an older church which stood in the Sarocco quarter and was demolished so that the town walls could be erected. It is an single-nave basillica, as are most of Corfu's churches. Its exterior decoration is not particularly interesting, apart from the elegant and impressive clock belfry which resembles that of its almost contemporary Greek church of St. George in Venice. Icons and ceiling frames grace the church's interior.

This church has entrances on both sides. Once we were inside we were very impressed by the ceiling paintings. The ceiling is divided into 17 panles surrounded by gilt frames, and the paintings depicted scenes from the works and miracles of the Saint. Later on we learned that these icons are 19th century copies as the origional (1727) unfortunately were destroyed by the humidity. These copies are supposed to be far inferior to the origionals. The four icons of the narthex are noteworthy and were painted by the Corfoit S. Sperantzas. A silver casket, made in Vienna in the 19th century, contains the embalmed body of the Saint. It was quite impressive to actually see it. A true moment of silence!

Address: Sarocco Quarter.
Directions: Right in the city centre.
