When trying to avoid beggers or vendors, the best thing to do is either ignore or simply say "non, merci". If you are rude it will only anger them and you never know who will become violent. Remember there is a difference between being stern and being rude. If any one tries to hand you a rose or a golden ring firmly deny them and walk away. It is common for beggars to ask if you speak English as well, or to use small children as ploys to get you to give them money. Near Mont Martre, expect to be rushed by individuals trying to sell you good luck bracelets who will even grab your wrist and forcefully attempt to tie them to you. Do not hesitate to be firm, no silly trinket is worth however many euros or worse, being pick pocketed. As for rude men, expect them. While most of them are harmless, do not make eye contact or give them any regards at all. If they physically approach you it is best to say in a loud voice "laissez moi tranquil" (leave me alone) or "Va t'en" (go away). French usually takes them off guard because they expect to take advantage of tourists (although yelling in any language gets the message across quite well). They will commonly ask what language you speak and definitely are more keen on American girls. It is best to either not reply or reply in French. Also, women tend to dress a bit more conservatively here. Short skirts or shorts and revealing tops will attract a lot of attention. I was once walking with a friend who was wearing a very short dress, and a car of men pulled up next to us and tried to convince us to get in the car with them. Just use your common sense and don't dress like a floosie.
