Novi Sad

If Belgrade was a lady she would be loud, wild and a little bit dirty and if Novi Sad was her sister she'd be the shy, retiring, quiet one that people didn't notice.......but we all know what they say about the quiet ones!
I found Novi Sad to be the perfect compliment to Belgrade. The contrast between them is incredible and in their own way they are both capital cities, although in the case of Novi Sad it's a region rather than a country.
There are large traffic free squares and pedestrian streets, a pretty city centre park, a huge shopping mall and a fortress in Petrovaradin to rival that of Belgrade's Kalamagden. I had wanted to go to Novi Sad for a long time so when I finally made it there I'm pleased to say I was Novi Happy!

Catholic Cathedral

Otherwise known as The Name of Mary Church, the cathedral was built in the 19th century to replace an earlier one that was damaged in the revolution earlier that century. With it's coloured tiled roof and spire it is very typical of Austro-Hungarian buildings, Novi Sad having been a part of that great empire. The building dominates the city centre without overwhelming it.

Old Greek School

Just down the pedestrian street from the main square is another smaller square and the delightful Old Greek School. Built in 1790 it's pastel colours and fine Romanesque windows make this an architectural gem.

we visited a few yrs ago as a big group taking aid to refugees still in Serbia-our base was near here so we travelled through several times &ate here but didnt get to do much of the tourist thing so its nice to see some tips about the place

I think I would enjoy this place - much more my kind of town than the other capital!
