Fortified Manor

Stokasay is a little village about 4 miles north of Ludlow in Shropshire. It is set amid the glorious hills of south Shropshire and is unremarkable little place except for its castle. Actually, castle is probably too grand a term for it. Fortified manor house would be a more accurate description. It stands back from the main Shrewsbury road a couple of hundred metres and is next to the parish church. It is a very tranquil and harmonious place now owned by English Heritage. There is a gift shop and cafe there too. Entrance fee was £5 for adults and £2.50 for children and there are free audio guides. The manor itself dates from the 13th century and although there is nothing to see inside is still interesting. There are commanding views from the tower.

We were driving from Cardiff to Conwy when we saw a sign and so diverted to Stokesay. Although it was too late to go inside, I explored the outside and church thoroughly. A real hidden gem.
