"A Taste of Tunisia" Sousse by Andrew_W_K

Sousse is a big international resort and as such is probably not truly representative of Tunisia as a country but for the tourists that go there is does give a flavour of the place in the people that you meet there.
A lot of people earn their living directly from tourism here so they tend to be multi lingual. Many shops and cafes and restaurants are geared to tourism rather than locals as well.
Of the place itself, Sousse is a large city of over half a million people so it's not just a resort.
Most tourists head for the Medina and the Souks where you need to be prepared to be accosted on a regular basis by the shop owners as they try to entice you into their shops. They know every trick in the book too so you will succumb at some point! Everything in the Souk is overpriced and much of it is tat and they won't hesitate to pass off one thing for another e.g. pewter as silver. You need to develop your bartering skills as well and even when you have you'll still end up on the losing side.
Don't let that put you off though, it's all generally good natured stuff and the Tunisians are nice people in the main. If you do get ripped off then just put it down to experience.
I have to admit that I walked past the Grand Mosque a couple of times before I realised what it was! It doesn't look like a mosque from the outside but rather part of the fortifications and defences of the nearby Ribat. The fact that it was built in the 9th century accounts for its defensive nature but once inside it's an impressive sight. The prayer room is all Moorish harmonious arches and the courtyard is a large and expansive area where you can take a minute to reflect. The minaret is more like a fortified watchtower than any minaret I've seen anywhere else but impressive nonetheless.
The Ribat is one of the fortifications of Sousse that date back to the 9th century. It's worth the small entrance fee for the views from the tower alone.

Great warning tips. I was robbed in the Medina some years ago.
Excellent Tourist Trap and warning tips. Something to take in great consideration. Wonderful page. I enjoyed it!
Hello, Andrew! It's great you have visited those places that seem so remote to me! Well done! Thanks for your advice!
This place sounds quite tricky but may be relatively easier for us to adapt ourselves.
Hi, awful you had to experience such a tragic traffic accident but I drove a lot of Tunisia in 2006-07 and was impressed with the roads and the driving - as well as the number of police in many places watching traffic. Thanks for yr pg on Sousse tho.
Pretty smart your daughter... thats the only way to deal it.
Brought my memories back :) thanks. Best wishes from Istanbul. Bora
