Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art: Stedelik Museum
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • The Stedelijk museum of modern art is the most important museum of modern and contemporary art in the Netherlands. It is a dynamic museum that presents developement in the visual arts. A number of works are permanently on view from the Stedelijk Museum's renowns collection of paintings and sculpture, drawings, prints, photographs, graphic design, applied art and design.
There are always a number of frequently changing exhibitions on view as well. Large reprospectives featuring well known artists, as well as small shows presenting younger artists. In short, a museum dedicated to the new.

Artis Zoo (Natura Artis Magistra): Artis Zoo
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • I usually don`t like zoos and I never visit them, so I entered Artis just because I had to attend a wedding party in the building that gives free way to the zoo gardens. Not that I enjoy the visit in particular, but it looks like a clean and well made place to bring kids.

    Events: Amsterdam Gay Pride Day
  • Tip Rating:
  • Yearly (gay pride) canal parade, with a lot of decorated boats. This is held around the end of July, beginning of August and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors. For the seventh time the extravagant Canal Parade will be held during Amsterdam Pride 2002.
With 250.000 spectators this event was the fourth largest in 2001 in Amsterdam. The Amsterdam Gay Pride is nominated for the Prize of the best City Promotion of The Netherlands.

Only Queensday (April 30) and the Cultural 'Uitmarkt/Sail' (end of August) attract more people. Amsterdam Pride has been the largest gay event in the Netherlands for seven years.

If you want to be a spectator of the Canal Parade we suggest you find a spot somewhere along the Prinsengracht or Amstel in the old city of Amsterdam. Also at the Stopera a lot of people are watching the boats come by. Many enjoy the parade standing on a bridge over the Prinsengracht.

    Events: Kwakoe Festival
  • Tip Rating:
  • Soccer, fun, laughter, sun, new experiences and foods, the best bbq'd chicken in the northern hemisphere, beer, more food, dancing and relaxation. A truly memorable experience.

Once a year, Amsterdam is treated to the greatest and most colourful festival around. What makes this festival so unique is that it's organised by and for the many migrant cultures of Amsterdam. The majority of the people live in the infamous "Bijlmer", which is where the white folk normally don't dare come after dark because of the drugs problem.

This festival gives the local community the opportunity to firstly hangout with old friends, family and other peopleof the same nationality. Secondly they can present their culture and heritage in a positive attitude, to all those willing to listen and learn.
Big mama's frying food, singing along with the Bob marley on the radio. Old black dudes with hair white as snow, sitting around a table sipping on 1 litre bottles of Djogo beer, cigar dangling out their mouths, laughing their asses off and just chilling. African style. The majority come from Suriname, which is a former colony of the netherlands on the north east coast of South America. Primarily of african descent but also a large community of suriname-hindoestanis of asian descent. Other countries include e.g. ghana, algeria, nigeria, and other african countries. Theres tons of booths that sell tradional homemade food, drinks and clothing and other assorted ***.
When the Kwakoe festival first started, it was basically just a simple soccer tournament. The different nationalties of the Bijlmer would make teams and then play against each other. Now it's a full-on social event. However the soccer is still the main item. The soccer field is in the centre of the festival area and all other stands etc. are in a circle around the field. Nowadays even amateur soccer teams fly from southamerica and africa to partake in these friendly matches.

Queensday / Koninginnedag: Queen`s Day Eve
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • The day before Queen`s day can be as exciting as the day after. In some neighbourhoods (Watergraafsmeer i.e.) the tradition is to make evening party with opera, jazz and folk songs. It is so entertaining that even if you are not dutch I bet you find yourself singing joyful Amsterdamse songs and dancing all over with them.

Queensday / Koninginnedag: Kids queen`s day in Vondelpark
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • On Queen`s day Vondelpark is full of kids, they are the only allowed to sell and entertain people here. They play music, make you magic jokes, and whatever comes out of their fantasy.

Canal Boat Tours: Canal Boats Tours
  • Tip Rating:
  • All of the central tour boat operators offer the same basic service of a one hour cruise around the central girdle of canals. The tour usually takes in Central Station, The Golden Bend of the Herengracht (traditionally the best address in Amsterdam), the Harlemmersluis floodgates which are used nightly to flush the canals, a section of the river Amstel, and various unique buildings and historical sites. Tours are by glass top boat seating between 40 and 100 people, and normally depart every 15 to 30 minutes. It is often possible to book boats for group tours or special events.
A one hour cruise with Holland International (opposite Central Station) costs 8.50€ for adults, and 5.00€ for children between 4 and 12 years old.

    Things To Do: De Pijp
  • Tip Rating:
  • It is one of my favourite districts. I enjoy spending my saturdays there, between the Albert Cuyp Markt and nice cafes and cheap surinamese food places.. Not to miss also some decent pizzerias.
