The Trinacria was for thousand years the sicilian symbol. It represents the triangular geographical form of the island. It is the symbolic representation of the monster to three legs, tŕquetra (to three vertexes or triangular). Sicily, for her particular geographical configuration, is characterized by three promontories, Pachino, Peloro and Lilibeo and therefore well it suits him for that figure. From this configuration to three vertexes the name of Triquetra or Trinacria it came that gave, perhaps in Hellenistic epoch, that strange representation and characteristic at the same time, of a figure gorgonica to three legs, adopted even in some coins of the classical antiquity, and become then the official symbol of the island.
