"The town of ceramics" Santo Stefano di Camastra by isolina_it

Santo Stefano di Camastra is a town of the Messina province situated on the slopes of the Nebrodi mountain range. It is well-known for its hand-painted ceramics as shows the myriad of small shops lined along its streets, offering pots, vases, plates and ceramic trinkets to suit every requirement. The town owes its present location to the clever Duca of Camastra who, in 1683, obtained by the Viceroy of Sicily the licence to rebuild on the site after the destruction of the old hamlet following a hydro-geological cataclysm. The old town centre plan is extremely interesting from the town-planning point of view: it is a rhombus inscribed in a square.
The buildings in the inhabited area date back to the period following the town rebuilding (1683 and following). A small church, an old cemetery, a palm-trees boulevard to be proud of - they are all fragments of an old story, small things that represent an indelible heritage.
