I've been to London to visit the Queen ...

But I didn't see her...
London was not ranked as "must see" in my own wish list but I changed my view. We took the opportunity of spending a long week-end (2.5d) in this city, as my 1st daughter (Vanessa) works here with her boyfriend. I really appreciated this city, surprizing, full of contrasts ... and full of tourists

The menu please ...

Day 1 (afternoon): Westminster, Big Ben, trafalgar square, Picadilly circus

Day 2: Buckingham palace, Hyde park, Kensington gardens, Notting hill, St James Park, Horse guards parade, Chinatown, Leicester square, Covent garden, Green park

Day 3: London and tower bridges, Thames path and riverside walk, Waterloo area and station, Camden town

... and back to France and to dry+hot temperature

Some suprizes and wrong stereotypes

Steps back in the history ...: some historical references are inverted between France and England: Trafalgar, Waterloo, Wellington, Nelson, ... are related to sever defeats for French (1st Empire - Napoléon). Be aware that these remembrances are part of the French langage: saying "C'est Trafalgar" means it's an unexpected disaster and Waterloo means it's a terrible defeat, without any hope of coming back...

Architecture The mix of architecture (modern, popular, classic, palace) is something I didn't expect and that I appreciate, gicing to this city a great and interesting contrast

Yes, speaking of contrasts, I've to recognize that the usual French stereotype about the English weather was true at that time, with one exception in the underground tube: so hot ... and cold + rainy outside.
The famous English fairplay and self control are may-be not so visibles in my view, according to some street scenes.
Anyway, I was really happy to feel a (very small) part of this city

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:An unexpected must see, after my 1st visit
  • Cons:Crowded, traffic, weather (??), dirty, expensive (hotels)
  • In a nutshell:Alive, dynamic, not contemplating the glorious heritage only
