Catalina Island is a fairly large island, just an hour boat ride away, off the coast of Southern California. It's hard to imagine that LA is only a short boat ride away! Originally owned by the Spanish, it eventually got purchased by the Wrigley family who developed it to become the get-away haven it is today. Back in the early 1900s, buffalos were shipped in to film a movie...the buffalos are still there today! As you start to move inland, away from Avalon, you will find meadows where the buffalos graze. As you can see from the picture shown here, Avalon is a small town, yet it is FILLED with activities to keep you and your kids occupied for DAYS!!!

Avalon is a fine getaway from the chaos of LA. Even better is the Isthmus, but you need a sailboat to stay on or to camp. That leaves you to walk with the buffalo. How much is the boat to Avalon nowadays?
