WOW! What an AMAZING city! Where do I start? Buenos Aires (BA) has beautiful architecture, a contagious energy for life, delicious food, friendly people, great shopping, rich culture, and that's just scratching the tip of the iceberg. I don't know if I can do the city any justice with my words, but I will most definitely try. Everyone has been asking me "What is it like in Buenos Aires? What is it like in Argentina? Are they a Third World country?" Well, I would have to say that BA is like Paris and New York blended together with a little bit of San Francisco thrown in. Of course, BA is none of those and is very different from each of the cities that I just mentioned, but I did notice some similarities. My parents actually thought that parts of BA reminded them of Seoul, Korea as well. Argentina is NOT a Third World country, just for the record! Yes, there is poverty and places in town where the standard of living is sub-par, but that's something you will get in any major city! Yes, they are having some financial difficulty right now, but several years ago, it was CHEAP for them to send their children to school in the U.S.! It's interesting to talk to some people here in the U.S. who seem to be completely clueless about Argentina. People are shocked when I tell them that Buenos Aires is a very modern city, not too different from New York City. People are also shocked when I tell them that not everyone looks "Mexican". It's funny that some people in California assume that anyone from a Latin American or South American country will look "Mexican". The people I met in Buenos Aires look pretty much like a mix of everything. Blondes, brunettes, redheads, fair skinned, olive complexion, etc... Most of Argentina was populated by people of Italian and Spanish descent, as well as British. You can notice the Italian influence by how people say goodbye to each other - "Ciao!" Buenos Aires means "good air" in Spanish which is actually a running joke among the portenos (the locals who live in BA). The reason why it's a joke is because BA tends to have a bit of air pollution so it's rather ironic that the city is named "good air".
Un pais con mucho energia y la gente muy simpaticos. La comida es el mejor! El vino, tambien! I am in the process adding more.... |

Dabs Wed Feb 8, 2006 16:22 UTC Great tips Angela! Heading here at the end of March :-) | BluBluBlu Wed Feb 1, 2006 09:10 UTC Nice BA page Angela! Blu | ets Tue Jan 25, 2005 01:34 UTC hi Angela! Sounds like you had a swell time too in BA. I'm going back this coming Sept to do more of the Tango scene and spend less time golfing. I've been taking Tango lessons in SF for 5 months now; got hooked while in BA last year. Manny | mtncorg Wed Oct 6, 2004 14:59 UTC You drank cafe con leche or mate? |
