Department of La Guajira - Colombia
Capital: Riohacha
Altitude: 3 meters over the sea level ( Riohacha)

The district is placed in the north zone of Colombia. Its economical activity is based on mining, agriculture and tourism.
There are amazing landscapes in Guajira, all of them, natural regions.

This city is located 160 Km. from Santa Marta. The city offers craftsmanship based on hats, ponchos, blankets and other coloured objects that are famous thanks to its quality.

The most popular attractions of Riohacha are the beaches with white sand which are surrounded by coconuts and palm-trees, apart from the tourist mole plenty of lights with a festive air.

La Guajira is an alternative tourism program and community. A network of Wayuu families, all from the Guajira, have come together to create a cooperative. We work together in local communities to develop tourism that shows off the natural and cultural riches of our region while maintaining the integrity of the Guajira, its traditions, its natural resources and more. There are more than ten years experience in eco and cultural tourism and generations of families who have extended their hospitality to tourists over the years.

The program offer lodging, food, transportation, guide, logistical, and security services in ethnotourism and eco tourism plans for those travelers who want to experience the ethnic and ecological beauty of the Guajira. In the northernmost tip of South America, "The Indigenous and Natural Reserve of the Guajira" is the best, most authentic place to go trekking, bike-riding, scuba diving, spelunking, or camping. For those a little less adventurous and are in need of a rest, we welcome you as well to our peaceful region.

Just as the Guajira is the ideal place for adventure tourism, here you can get, first hand, a taste of our cultural tradition -- one of the richest and most important cultures in South America. Our cooperative works in eco and ethnic tourism as a proposal for alternative economic development while conserving our cultural and ecological beauty and integrity.

La Guajira is a true paradise!!! I intend to visit on my Colombian trip in December. There is very little info available about the peninsula - I'm so glad I discovered your pages. Would you mind asking some more questions via e-mail? Thanks so much!!!
