OUR ANCESTRAL STACKS

In the SALT mine of Nemocón we pay homage to our Muiscas ancestral stacks and the effort of several of miners. A majestic subterranean master piece, with more than five centuries of history, has become one of the most important tourist attractive places of the Bogotá Savannah in only 2 years opened to public.

To 80 mts under Earth beat the warrior’s heart. An incredible crystal of Pure SALT which weight over 2000 Kg, is lit by a soft red light; it has become the epicenter of the SALT Mine of Nemocón. It’s told, in 1905, a strong miner found a high purity salt crystal which he cut it until he shaped it into a heart. This heart lead us to the heart of Nemocón, town located to 70 Km from Bogotá. This master piece built by the nature and man’s hand has a historic, geologic and at the same time a religious meaning. Nemocón in Muisca Language Means “Warrior Crying” cause it was the place where the Zipas gathered together to cry and shout their defeat or the death of their chiefs. Nemocón saw the exploitation of its mine since times of conquest until the last century. It is believed that from its depths were taken out over 9 million of tons of this white gold, like was called by some historians.

THE CHAPEL

The miners’ tradition and devotion lives in the ballroom and the salt chapel. A big spherical rock cut by the miners, weights about 1,300 Kg and is protected by the Virgen del Carmen, the mine patroness. Nowadays the place is still the scenery of great celebration and homage and has become the cultural and artistic heart of the mine, with artistic exhibitions and concerts.
