New York City Local Custom Tips by clueless83

My trip to New York was the first time I had ventured on American soil and I had expectations for the people as well as the place. Several years earlier my dad had been on a business trip to Indiana and the way the people treated him there let me assume that that was the American way (seriously, people wanted to shake his hand just because he was English!).

Anyway, as with any city you are going to encounter lovely, delightful people and unfortunately you will experience less savoury characters. My brother cheerfully reminded me that New York, although a tourist destination, will always thrive as a city, tourists or no tourists where as places like Las Vegas rely on and cater to tourists and the little town in Indiana my dad had visited probably sees foreigners as a novelty. Valid points to consider when you are happily snapping photographs of the Empire State Building and a rather aggressive woman walks past you complaining about, and I quote, the "clicky-clicky bull ****!" :-O

Oh and lets not forget the delightful people at JFK, firstly the woman who snapped that I should be 'behind the line' when I simply enquired whether she was queueing. No need to bite my head off! And then the guy who checked my passport who did not seem to understand, despite me telling him several times, that I was here with my university. Quite a contrast to the man who checked my passport at the airport in Vegas who when taking my security photograph told me to give my best showgirl smile!

So just be aware that while it may be all 'have a nice day' on tv, its not necessarily like that in real life.

P.S. Before anyone complains, I'm not bashing New Yorkers, I met some very charming New Yorkers on my trip but in comparison to any other place I have visited to this day (apart from one grotty little amusement park in England which no longer exists) I met a fair few rude people.
