A magnificent cathedral. It almost seemed like it was glowing in the daylight because it is made of white/light marble. We took the elevator to the top for an additional €2 per person to the €5 regular fee . It was well worth it. At the top, one can admire the amazingly excellent sculptures of saints, flowers, etc. I just can't imagine how the builders did such a wonderful job during the time it was built with the tools they had. There are marble statues in almost all the spires, and in almost every corner. It was absolutely stunning! |
| | The drive to Milan We drove from Basel, Switzerland to Milan. The drive was so beautiful, what with the Swiss Alps surrounding us at times. I would do it again if given another opportunity. Unfortunately, we did not stop to take pictures. This picture was taken while we were driving with the window up. Just imagine how much prettier it would have been if I took it while still.
Once we crossed the border, we knew we were in Italy even without seeing a "Benvenuti" sign. The side of the roads were littered with trash, so unlike Switzerland's, which was clean. :( |
| Galleria Vittorio Emanuelle II |
| | Shopping Prices are outrageously high at the Piaza del Duomo/Galleria Vittori Emanuelle II shops. A sale item that has been deeply discounted could still cost €500! These were definitely high-priced fashion boutiques.
However, bargains can still be found in any of the street markets. We went to Viale Papiniano market (Green Line- S. Agostino), which is open on Tuesdays and Saturdays. I found bargains on assorted sweaters, boots/shoes and purses, etc.
We also happened upon the Washington Street fair that happens once a year. It covered 3 or 4 blocks. Dresses, shoes, sweaters, etc were on offering. Unfortunately, there were more of the flea market-type items than quality items. There were also games and rides for the kids, bands, and a parade.
There are other street markets besides Viale Papiniano like the Fiera di Senigallia flea market off Alzaia Naviglio Grande (Green line- P. TA Genova); open on Saturdays. |
