Chartres is a large town close enough to Paris to make it a good destination for a weekend trip. The beautiful cathedral and the Musée de Beaux Arts are the main attraction but the town is very walkable, there is a wide variety of architecture to see, and the central part of town is filled with shops and restaurants. Through the fall of 2008, they are doing a spectacular light show at night around the cathedral, which is most definitely worth seeing. Anything I write will oversimplify the experience of seeing the show, but they're essentially projecting elements of the cathedral's stained glass windows and art from the museum onto the facades of the cathedral, museum, and other nearby buildings. It is enormous, free and very beautiful.
