While wondering around Havana, we inquired of various people whether or not the legendary guitarist Manuel Galban happened to be playing anywhere. Knowing that Galban is in his 90's, we weren't too confident of catching him anywhere. We found a bartender who confirmed what we thought - that Galban does not play anymore due to his age. However, the bartender stated that if we wanted to hear the best guitarist in Cuba, we should go see Elmer Ferrer. I asked what type of music he played and the bartender responded, "He's a combination of Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Jimi Hendrix." ("Yeah, right...", I thought to myself). He told us where he was playing that night so off we went to Don Cangrejo's in Miramar. Rather than bore you with all the details, the bottom line is that I about fell out of my chair when Ferrer started playing. He is not only one of the best (or the best) guitarists in Cuba, he is easily one of the best (or the best) guitarist I've ever seen/heard in my life!! I am a guitar player myself who has played in various bands and I was awestruck!! Later, I got on his website and found out how popular he is in Europe, South America and Canada. I've since purchased his two CD's and will be keeping an eye out for any new recordings. If you're in Havana and you like this kind of music, check him out. His website will tell you where he's playing. http://www.elmerferrer.com |
