A Magical Day

We were lucky enough to meet a Thai couple who were from this island. They were our airport transfer mini bus driver and his wife and we asked if they knew of a school we could donate some things we had brought for children. They offered to take us to Koh Yao Noi Island. We were a group of 12 and it was the best thing we did in our 3 week stay. A long-boat took us on the hour ride, stopping at an island "hong"on the way. We were able to walk knee deep through a cavern entrance into a "forgotton world" of palms, birds and a lagoon. Magnificent. We then made our way to Koh Yao Noi and were met by Tuk-Tuks for an hour tour of the island. We stopped at a fishing village and ate bananas fried in coconut batter by the edge of the road. Next stop a fish market where our guides bartered for fish and crabs. These we took to a seafront restaraunt where they were cooked to perfection. After lunch we made our way to the school to donate our boxes of school supplies. This was a great experience and the teacher much appreciated our gesture. I took a bag of sweets for the children but they were more interested in the digital camera and looking at themselves in the screen. The island only recently got mains electricity and not many spoke English. There certainly wern't any "western" toilets.! It was like seeing "the real Thailand" before tourism took hold. We left the island and stopped to snorkel and then visited a small sandy beach island to sit and relax and watch the sunset. Truly magnificent with the dramatic backdrop of the Phang Nga Bay. One of those days you will remember forever. Returning to the Phuket harbour in the dark on a longboat was fun and we all said we would never forget this day. We are returning this year and it was so good we are going to return to this island paradise and bring more things for the school.
