"A Rich History" Lincoln by raquelitalarga

British visitors are especially surprised when they visit Lincoln because a lot of people assume all of Lincolnshire is flat fenland! The castle and cathedral command a magnificent hill with the pedestrianised road up to it called Steep Street!
This 'upper' historic area of Lincoln is particularly attractive, though the 'castle' inside the imposing walls are a disappointment. The cathedral was chosen for some scenes in the 'Da Vinci Code' movie and is definitley worth the entance fee. The city was founded by the romans (named Lindem Colonia) and a roman gate and part of the city wall can be found up here. This is the best area to find small, independently owned shops, pubs and restaurants.
Through the 'lower' part of the city the River Witham flows. It has chain stores, a small marina with 'eateries', the modern university and traces of Lincoln's industrial past (Siemens factory, train station) so is less picturesque.
The countyside around Lincoln is gently pretty and the 'wolds' are not quite as lovely but certainly much less touristy than the Cotwolds. Be aware if you want to take a bus trip to visits some villages the transport links are TERRIBLE and this was my main bugbear when living here.
The impressive stone carvings on the cathedral facade are being restored. We took this photo as Lincoln Football team are called The Imps.
A statue with a daft name next to a shopping mall with no architectural merit.

The Cathedral looks wonderful!
A place I have always wanted to visit - moreso since I recently discovered my mothers ancestors came from Lincolnshire. Thanks for your informative tips and good photos.
