Things To Do: Go to Gaol

  • Geelong - The Old Geelong Gaol
  • The Old Geelong Gaol

  • The Old Geelong Gaol, formerly a high security prison, remains much the same as when it was operating until 1991. Inside the Gaol it is cold, bleak and primitive. It is hard to comprehend such harsh facilities were in daily use so recently to house prisoners.

Don`t miss cell 47 which features the "Window to Freedom" - a grafiti style wall mural painted by an inmate while serving the time of his imprisonment. It is a unique part of the gaol`s history.

The Gaol is open 1pm-4pm every Saturday, Sunday, Public and School Holidays and 11am-3pm Thursday and Friday.

National Wool Museum: Award winning experience
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Geelong`s major tourist attraction is the National Wool Museum. Housed in a historic bluestone building this museum has three separate galleries focusing on the history, politics and heritage of one of Australia`s major indrusties. When completed in 1872 the building was an architectural masterpiece of the time and was used for the storage, inspection and sale of wool.

    Geelong Waterfront: Eastern Beach Area

  • Bay Walk bollards
  • by Jarra

  • The Eastern Beach complex icludes restaurants, sandy beaches, swimming pontoons and diving platforms, gardens, barbecues and picnic areas. Here you can spend a whole day just relaxing and enjoying your life. When I last time visited the Eastern Beach on 30 December 2003 it was 41 degrees Celsius! That's definitely too hot for a Finn.

From Eastern Beach, it is a pleasant walk west along the foreshore. You can`t miss the Geelong`s famous bay walk bollards, a series of 104 bollards painted by local artist Jan Mitchell to represent figures from Geelong`s history.

The Great Ocean Road: An unforgettable journey
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • You should take an unforgettable journey along Victoria`s Great Ocean Road, the world`s most inspiring coastal drive. The length of the road is about 280 kilometres from Geelong to Warrnambool. The Great Ocean Road is one of Australia`s most visited attractions. It meanders along the coast of the Southern Ocean between golden beaches with rugged rock outcrops, and the Otway Ranges, and passes through the Angahook-Lorne State Park and Otway State Forest, abundant rain-forest area. The Great Ocean area is rich in attractions ranging from cheeseries and quiant restaurants, to raging surf and spectacular outcrops. Among the most popular is the Port Campbell National Park. These outcrops, include "the 12 Apostles" a spectacular collection of eroded sandstone outcropts and are the centre of the park.
