"FATCHWERK TOWN OF MILTENBERG" Miltenberg by balhannah

Miltenberg Travel Guide: 48 reviews and 222 photos

WHAT A GEM OF A TOWN!

Miltenberg is a picturesque medieval little town, by the Odenwald forest and the river Main.

The area was settled in the 2nd Century AD by the Romans as part of their great defensive wall called the Limes.

This well preserved Town felt like time had stood still!

The oldest inn in Germany and its picture perfect old market square surrounded by some magnificent Franconian style half-timber framed houses, is just a small taste of what else there was to see.

It is a Town where you MUST WALK.

The Fortress called Mildenburg was built in the 13th century and used by the Prince Electors and Archbishops of Mainz for collecting taxes and as a frontier garrison and military outpost towards the borders and Principality of Würzburg.

Wine production was important in the 14th century, and this brought much wealth to Miltenberg.

Wine was exported to Nuremberg and Frankfurt.

Today, Miltenberg still produces first class wine which visitors can taste in the old wine cellars.

What a pretty town! And I like the setting with River Main and the forest covered hills.

Another great little page about your adventures in Germany's small towns. Miltenberg looks indeed very picturesque.

I loved it for the many half-timbered buildings, but there was more than that!

Miltenberg is quite close to Frankfurt, so one year we went there for our annual staff outing. Spent the day walking around and chatting, with stops for lunch and drinks, and then returned to Frankfurt by ship on the Main River. I have also been through on my bicycle:
