"ART NOUVEAU RIGA!" Riga by balhannah

We arrived in Riga on the Cruise ship "Vision of the Seas"
at 7am on 27th July, 2011

We were soon off the Ship and making our way into the Capital city of Latvia.

Instead of heading straight into the main city centre, we turned left, and went to explore the Art Nouveau buildings first.

RIGA.....

Riga was a lovely surprise!

Riga was built in Romanesque and Gothic styles by German crusaders and Cistercian Monks, and was then known as Livonia and not Riga.

Many call Riga - Europe’ s capital of Art Nouveau, perhaps a bit hard to dispute when you have been and seen so much of the architecture in this lovely city.

Alberta Street is full of picturesque Art Nouveau buildings designed by master architects and along with Strelnieku Streets, comprise the biggest gallery of Art Nouveau architecture in Riga.

Many buildings have still not been renovated and you can still venture into the beautiful although neglected hallways.

People have occasionally called Riga little Paris while Napoleon once referred to it as a suburb of London.
This may be because Napoleon never conquered London or Riga.

All the wood buildings in Riga were burnt to the ground in preparation for Napoleon's attack on the city.

Because of this, we now have the lovely Art Nouveau architecture in the city.

RIGA IS A FAVORITE CITY OF MINE!

Back on the Ship again, and soon are steaming out of Riga's Harbour and heading overnight to our next port of Call which is Gydnia in Poland.

Please join me at the next Port, where we meet fellow friend and VT'er, "evaana" and her husband.

We not only see Gydnia, but we go to GDANSK and have a wonderful time in the beautiful city.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Lots and lots to see!
  • Cons:A little spread out, but I still walked everywhere
  • In a nutshell:If you love Art Nouveau, then you will love Riga!

I am very glad you like Riga :)
You write: "Many call Riga - Europe’ s capital of Art Nouveau" ! Do you know why ? It's because in Riga are about 800 buildings in true Art Nouveau (or as we here say: 'Jugendstils') ! Not only decorative Jugendstil, but also National Romantismus style and more rational Vertical style ...

No one other city in the World have so many this style buildings ...

    Welcome to explore Riga :D

I visited Riga many times 60th-80th but unfortunately never since then.
I'd like to correct the joke about the three Riflemen. There wasn't such a custom in Soviet times for men to gather by four men together to have a drink but it was a custom to gather by three men for a bottle of vodka! Feel the difference!

Dee, I visited the capital of Latvia more than 10 years ago and I was also very impressed by the Art Nouveau buildings. I really like your photos of the details of these buildings. - Another of my favourite buildings is the Academy of Sciences, although the locals don't seem to like it.

Holger, thanks for visiting. I am really intrigued by what they can do with art nouveau. I just love it, and would have like to have kept wandering the streets, but I was with my husband and he would have thought I had really got lost if I did!!!
