SLUNJ - RASTOKE

The town of Slunj, situated on the river Slunjcica, has an old fortified town dating back to the year 1323, unique nature with beautiful places such as Rastoke. It is believed Slunj was bulit by the Croatian king Zvonimir, but its name is mentioned already during the early feudal system in the 12th century.

THE LEGEND OF THE FAIRIES

So, let me tell you about the legend of the fairies in Rastoke, that is as old as the village itself ....

These Croatian fairies got up to a little mischief when the Millers were sitting around at night..
After the Millers had finished their work, they left their Horses beside the Mill to rest at night until needed at dawn. Un-beknown to them, they were stolen by the Fairies and returned in the morning before being missed.
When the Millers saw the Horses, they couldn't understand why the horses were short of breath, tired, and their mane was braided!

The Fairies would do their laundry in Slunjcica River, and then they would dance around and play, calling the millers to join them...

And so it goes they still gather today, and anyone who really wants to see them can, at the Fairy's Hair fall!

If you believe in Fairies, it may be the place to come!

At the moment, this village seems undiscovered by the hoards of tourists.
It was quite and peaceful, very pretty and a favorite of mine!

Now we are continuing onto KARLOVAC where we see the ravages of War, please come along for the ride!

Dee, happy new year 2013. Lovely little page about this Croatian gem here. We once stayed one night in Slunj on our way to Bihac in Bosnia and Herzegowina. - We really enjoyed our few hours in Slunj and Rastoke.

Slunj is gorgeous! We nearly missed it! I just happened to notice the waterfalls from the car window, so a u-turn was made and we spent several hours there.
Plitivice lakes is the most incredible area of beautiful waterfalls that I have seen so far!

This is the first time I have ever heard of wartime damage to a waterfall, but I’m sure it could very easily happen if some threw lots of explosives at it.
