Arriving in Alberta | view from Waterton Lakes township |
We travelled from Revelstoke to Banff. Here we stayed in a lovely b&b for 3nights. Our 1st day was spent travelling the Bow Valley. We stopped nearly everywhere, walked, took photos, so much to see in a day. Johnston Canyon was fabulous, its like and adventure walking in these places. We went as far as lake Louise, did the Gondola ride which you got great views from. The weather turned bad, so Lake louise wasn't at its best. Moraine Lake was the same, what a pity. A stop at Mt. Norquay on the way home for views over Banff and surrounding mountains. An excellent day 1. Next, Lake Minnewanka, excited to see Big Horn sheep grazing and sleeping on the road. Some pretty lakes here with good reflections.
Moving onto Canmore, on the way to Calgary. Calgary was a large city. A great chance to see the Olympic site, think the ski Jumpers have nerves of steel after seeing the height of the jumps. Didn't realize they were that big! |
| | Calgary onwards From Calgary, we headed to Drumheller. The scenery changed from the beautiful mountains, to prairies, then a very unusual landscape near Drumheller. Hoodoos? Were we on the moon? Dinosaurs roamed here years ago, so we went and had a look at the excellent and cheap Royal Tyrrell museum. Saw some little old towns and lots and lots of oil wells. Stayed at a B&B at Munson. Heading to Waterton National Park, we passed Wind farms. Vulcan, a small town en route, is a Star Wars town. Saw some huge dairies, so different to Australia. Stopped at Fort macleod and had a look at the fort, about $7 admission. (www.nwmpmuseum.com) and for Fort Macleod (www.fortmacleod.com) The Head-Smashed In buffalo jump is s18ks from here. This is world heritage side and very well done. Admission is $9 (www.head-smashed-in.com) This was very interesting. Moved onto the small town of Pincher creek for a couple of nights at a Motel.
Waterton Lakes. This is the most beautiful place. Not touristy. Deers roaming the town, just loved this place. It was good to have a look at the Prince of Wales Hotel after seeing it on so many travel shows. |
| | Warterton onwards Warterton through the Crows Nest Pass, didn't see much because of rain. The Lundbreck waterfalls were good because of the rain, can't have everything! Headed into British columbia for a little while then came out at Jasper. More incredible scenery, have never seen so much water (we live in the driest continent on earth) So many glaciers, so beautiful around here. Quiet a bit of wildlife too.
What we saw of Alberta was beautiful. If you have a chance, go to Waterton, this was the best in our eyes. |
