COME WITH ME AND EXPLORE THIS PRETTY VILLAGE

East Meon was a little Village I found when researching the county of Hampshire. I saw some photo's of thatched rooved Cottages, and I just knew that I had to see the Village!

In the 6th century AD, people called the "Meon" from Denmark invaded central Hampshire. They settled in central Hampshire and they gave the River Meon its name. They also founded the village of East Meon.

East Meon is believed to date back to 400 and 600 AD, as there are bronze age burial barrows within the parish which date back to around 2,000 BC.
In 2000, a woman found a Medieval ring in her garden made of a copper alloy and was gilded, another pointer towards early settlement.
The village was part of a Royal Manor belonging first to King Alfred the Great, and later to William the Conqueror as recorded in The Domesday Survey of 1086.
Tragedy struck East Meon when about 1/3 of the population died of the "Black Death"

Today, this is a peaceful, pretty Village, with the River Meon running through it. The River begins nearby.

Nearby, are the historic Hinton Ampner House and Garden's which are looked after by the National Trust. We visited them, and both were excellent!
The popular long distance footpath South Downs Way also passes nearby.

I had never heard of the Meon people before – but whoever they were, they certainly found a beautiful place to settle down back in the 6th century AD.
