Canazei is in the northern Italian region of Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, located in the upper part of the Val di Fassa, about 70 km northeast of Trento.
Located in the Ladin-speaking part of the Dolomites in Italy, its only a small village of less than 3,000 residents.
If you enjoy snow skiing, then you may know it, as it's on the Sella Ronda ski circuit.
The name "Canazei" is apparently connected with reeds and the settlements in the valley. This area was sparsely inhabited until the start of the 20th century, but when the Passo Pordoi was pushed through to Arabba and down to the neighbouring province of Belluno, then the area grew.
The town now depends a lot on winter and summer tourism and the population has almost doubled in the last 30 years.
What is nice though, is it still looks like a traditional Village, as they have tried not to loose their traditional customs and ways, plus the village is a centre of the Ladin culture with traditional festivals held during the year.
We found the town a delight to visit, and getting here and from was a fantastic journey through incredible scenery of the mighty Dolomites.
We are now moving onto
Cortina d'Ampezzo
Please join me here for a lovely gondola ride in the Dolomites.
- In a nutshell:Stunning frescoes in the Village & stunning scenery!

I am so enjoying seeing the Dolomites with you and have now determined to see them "for real" one day! I especially enjoyed the views from the tramway - spectacular :-)
If you do Sarah, check when the tramways are operating before you go. I forgot to do that, and only three in the area were open, we did two of them. I guess it would have been very expensive to do a lot more. And thanks for visiting this part of Italy virtually with me.
That's good advice - I wouldn't want to miss the chance to get up so high :-)
Dee, lovely little page about your driving adventures in the Dolomites. It looks like you were really lucky with your accommodation.
Oh more mountains!! I once saw a marmot up on Falzareggo pass :-) Fantastic views, especially from Passo Pordoi :-) Good that you got a hot chocolate :-) I think they open in summer, because it is all a busy hiking region, but then only July and August, maybe September.
Those poor people with all the frescos on their house! I hope they are at least proud of it, so they don’t mind all the tourists stopping to have a look.
No wonder your camera was working overtime on the tramway and up on the summit! And it’s great that you got to stay in the Turret Room of that hotel.
Such a beautiful mural and the detailing on the buildings is gorgeous! Nice page!
