"TAORMINA AT ITS BUSIEST!" Taormina by balhannah

Taormina Travel Guide: 280 reviews and 758 photos

The climate is a dream, its position, perfect panoramas, monuments and luxurious flora!

Taormina is high on hill overlooking Mt. Etna and the beautiful coastline.

Taormina was an inspiration to D.H. Lawrence who, whilst in Taormina wrote "Lady Chatterley's Lover", and based various aspects of his novels on his experiences in the city.

Famous people have come in the droves over the years, some names you are sure to know................

Alexander Dumas, Johannes Brahms, Gustav Klimt, Richard Wagner, Oscar Wilde, Truman Capote, John Steinbeck, Ingmar Bergman, Francis Ford Coppola, Leonard Bergman, Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, Federico Fellini, Cary Grant, Gregory Peck, Elizabeth Taylor, and Woody Allen.

Just don't come on day when it is real busy, heavens knows when that would be!

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Nice views from the Village
  • Cons:A lot too many people at one time for a small Village
  • In a nutshell:Spoilt by a crush of people

We were lucky to stay in Taormina (at Mazzaro beach) in the mid seventies before mass tourism. We saw the fiest of the Carretta Siciliana with the typical Sicilian music. We were nearly alone at the Greek theatre!
We came back 10 and 20 years later staying in Taormina but no caretta or Sicilian music anymore and more and more crowds of tourists. It is the fate of all nice places over all Italy.
That's why I wrote on my home page "Heureux qui comme Ulysse ? has visited all the nice places of Italy and Greece a quarter of a century ago (at least).

So sad that you couldn't see more. I would also have hated it to be jammed in such a crowd! But the parks are lovely, especially Parco Duca Di Cesaro. Reminds me a bit of Sintra. And Giardini Railway Station ceiling looks absolutely fantastic!!
