Invercargill is located on the southern tip of the South Island and was
established by Europeans in 1856, when settlers set up a
flax milling industry in the area.
Before this time the area had always been popular with Maori.
The Town we thought was quite nice, there are influences of the early the
Scottish and English migrants who settled here, most of the streets being
named after rivers in Scotland and the UK.
There is a chance when visiting this area at the right time of the year of
maybe experiencing the famous ‘Southern Lights’ or ‘Aurora Australis’
that are a phenomenon in these southern skies!
It is also famous because of the film “The World’s Fastest Indian” which is
the story of Burt Munro from Invercargill, quite an interesting film that I
have just recently seen.
INCLUDED TIPS ON THIS PAGE ARE:-

Dee, very interesting page a about Invercargill. I especially like the Off the Beaten Path tips about Bluff. Well done. :o)
We have 2 nights in Invercargill to complete our Kiwi trip next month and I wasn't overly excited about the town until I looked through your pages-think we will be busy and very much interested.
I love all the waterfalls, Dee. So many of them and Nugget Point looks great as well. Good page!
I didn't know that Invercargill has so many interesting places around it.
Lots of good information here. It is a pity that the weather at the Bluff turned bad, and so quickly!
