"WORLD'S RICHEST DEPOSIT OF BLACK OPAL" Lightning Ridge by balhannah

Lightning Ridge Travel Guide: 51 reviews and 152 photos

IS AT LIGHTINING RIDGE, located in outback NSW

The 'Ridge', as it is known to the locals, is different.

Do not expect to see real clean, tidy, well dressed people, and lovely homes,
but instead, people that look a little on the grubby side,
men with long beards, and holes in their trousers,
and homes that are called "Humpys".............

this is the way I see Lightning Ridge.

I would call it a "quirky" town, full of quirky characters, who may be
Millionaires, but you would not be able to tell by looking at them,
their homes, or their mode of transport.

Opal fever comes to those, who just happen to find one piece of Opal, then they can not stop looking for more!

There are people from 58 different countries that call Lightning Ridge home...............

They have Opal Fever!

This town is famous as a thriving frontier town full of the iconic Australian characters.

There are many very different experiences here, from sculptures
underground, bottle-houses, antique lamps, castles, astronomy
monuments, unique gardens, hills named 'Lunatic', 'Pig' and Bald',
'The Glengarry Hilton' and being able to tour underground mines.

Lots of the roads where the Mines are, are not named,
but instead, a coloured Car Door shows you the way.

It is also the address of the people who live here,
they live on a coloured car door road, and pick their mail up at the
Post Office, in a Post box.

Lightning Ridge is 720kms from Sydney, Brisbane (750km) and Melbourne
(1,200km) and is also serviced by CountryLink.

I must say that this is one of your most interesting pages, Dee, I wouldn´t mind going there. The Chambers of the Black Hand look awesome and I love reading about the opals. And there is so much more of interest here in this page.

That's quite an interesting place, full of eccentric people! I would love to see the opals, but I'd probably be shocked at the prices.

My husband would love this place, he's always wanted to go mining for opals! And he could get a nice swim in :-)

It's good they are establishing a bit of an artist community. That way, they will have something to fall back on when the minerals run out.

If you add any more here let me know, I'd like to see it and I suspect you haven't finished yet. Well done, Dee.
