Le Puy-en-Velay Travel Guide: 61 reviews and 265 photos

Le Puy en Velay, in the heart of the Massif central.

Surrounded by high hills and the famous conical volcano forms of the region, this Town sits in a very impressive position!

Le Puy is famous for being the start point of one of the main pilgrimage paths in France that lead to Santiago de Compostella, so no wonder the town record's over 700,000 visitor's each year!

We couldn't have been there in the busy season, as it was fairly quiet, only met one tour group on all my walk's.

The main time for the Pilgrimage is from the 25th of March till the 15th of October

Thanks John! This was a wonderful town! If I had known it was so good, we would have stayed the night here.

This town has got the wow facor for sure - amazing that the chapel is built on top of a volcanic basalt pinnacle! And the statue of Joseph and Jesus sure stands out :)

That chapel perched on that peak is an amazing sight! The huge statues too, and the distant views of Polignac. This seems to be a town which really rewards the effort required to explore it :-)

Wow, what an intersting and beautiful town! These three "peaks" are certainly a marvellous sight! Still can't believe how high on top St. Michael's Chapel sits! The door of the grotto and the light behind is amazing. And this all is where my favourite water (to drink) almost comes from: Volvic :-)
