Ayutthaya

Located 85ks north of Bangkok, Ayutthaya (World Heritage site) is well

worth a visit. The City was built by 33 Ayutthayan Kings over 400years,

and dates back until 1350. There are lots of ruins here to explore which

would take more than one day.

Ayutthaya rose to greatness quickly and just as quickly, collapsed.

Burmese Armies burned, looted and destroyed most of the Cities

monuments. They killed, enslaved and scattered the population.

The Royal Court resettled in what is known as Bangkok today. Even after

the Burmese were defeated, Ayutthaya was beyond repair.

The ruins are now known at the "AYUTTHAYA HISTORICAL PARK"

There is now a modern & old Ayutthaya.

If you stop by the river sometimes you can find the men will bring up pieces of pottery. clean em up, put them in a gold casing and you have a lovely necklace!

Your photos give a picturesque image of a tragic place. I wish our water towers were disguised so beautifully!

Ayuthaya looks like a great place to spend a day or two - and your photos of the Bang Pa summer palace are amazing! It was interesting to see the elephant feeding session too. Thanks for this excellent little page!

What a great place for a day trip, though it's a shame you didn't see more of the palace. I like the sound of the boat ride for the return - you can see so much of local life on the banks of a river :-)
