Sarawak cultural village and other Kuching, Malaysia Things to Do Tips

The Cultural Village is located on a 17acre site, approx 40mins from Kuching, near the Holiday Inn Resorts. Over the large area are seven different ethnic villages. You will see their style of home. Go inside and have a look, in one, we were able to taste what they were cooking. When enough people are there, they will put on a small dance performance for you.
The seven different Ethnic groups represented here are: Bidayuh Longhouse....Iban Longhouse... Penan Hut.............Orang Ulu Longhouse........Melanau Rumah Tingii.......Malay house....... Chinese house.
It is open from 9 - 5.15pm daily and entrance fee in 2008 was 45rm adults 22.5rm children
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit here. It gave us knowledge on the Ethnic groups and we enjoyed this experience.

We did a day tour that included the Pitcher plant and Orchid nursery, Wind and Fairy caves.
Our guide was a nice young Iban man who told us a little about life in Kuching. The nursery was interesting, and worth a look around, I am a gardener so really enjoyed it. Fairy cave is fantastic. You climb a huge amount of steps to enter the cave. the cave is a jaw-dropper, much bigger than the batu caves, we loved it. Photos are hard to take, you can't take in the size of this place. Wind caves we didn't like. Pitch black, not worth going to. this was an enjoyable days outing and the fairy cave is one of our borneo highlights.

We took a taxi for a short ride to the Civic Centre. Here, you go up the lift in the tower for great views all over the city, and its free!! Nice views are had in all directions. You get a good view of Mount Sentubong.

Directions: A short walk across a park to the Museum

The Museum is situated on both sides of the road, with an overpass bridge connecting them.
There is and old (built in 1891) and new side. You will find exhibits of Natural history, Indigenous people, Culture, and the colonial & modern day history of the area. A good display of tradional wood carvings can be seen here. There is also a Wildlife exhibit, if you like looking at stuffed Animals. Its worth having a look at, and its amongst some nice gardens.
Its open daily from 9-6pm and ADMISSION IS FREE.

The monument is located in the Park next to the Museum. It honours past ethnic warriors. At the base of the monument are brass plaques of the warriors.

This is a nice way to relax after a hot day. The cruise departs from the Riverside at approx 5.30pm for a hour and half cruise. It takes you as far as the markets, then back down the river for quite a way. Light refreshments and a commentary are given, and on the way back, just sit back and listen and watch the entertainment.

A day tour to Bako. Very bumpy road through Industrial area to the port to catch a local boat to the National Park. You see Mt. Kuching in the distance and fishermen. We had a guide with us because we were on a tour, this came in handy for spotting wildlife. He pointed out 2 Vipers, one old and one baby, Bees hive (bees that don't sting) and Monkeys. We did a jungle trek that was good, then came out of the jungle onto a beautiful secluded beach. We had a rest, then took a local boat (for a small amount of money) to view the Sea Stacks. These were beautiful as was the coastline, well worth doing. Lunch was included in the tour, it wasn't the best, then we were left up to our own devices for a couple of hours. Saw more Monkeys, Goanna and some Squirrels. This trip is well worth doing.

Directions: Departs from Kuching. We booked through the travel agent at the Holiday Inn Hotel and were very happy with the service.

When we finished the Jungle Trek, we came out on a lovely secluded beach. Here, an offer was made to take you to see the sea stacks, with a local man in his boat, for a small cost. The more people that go, the cheaper it is, although very cheap even for 2 people. You should do this, as if you don't, like some in our group, you miss out on seeing the beautiful scenery.

At the Sarawak Cultural Centre, as well as seeing individual dance performances at their Longhouses, there are also two shows held daily at 11.30 - 12.15 and 4.30 - 5.15.
Each Tribal group does their dances. These shows are included in your entrance fee, AND SHOULD NOT BE MISSED. Excellent!

The Aquarium is near the Museum and Botanic gardens. It is quite old with not a lot to see, although we did manage to see some fish that we had not seen before. It is worth a quick browse, and children would probably love it.
ADMISSION IS FREE, so can't complain.
