kep lapis cake
This is an amazing cake that we saw in Sarawak.
Kek Lapis Sarawak, also known as the multi layered cake, is very popular traditional cake in Sarawak that you will see during festive seasons and social functions and more!
Each layer has different flavours and colours when combined. I couldn't get over all the different designs, it really would be a shame to cut it, to me it was like a piece of artwork!
You can visit the factory (see website) or just browse the streets, I'm sure you will find somebody selling it!
FACTORY OPEN.....daily from 8:30am to 10:00pm
The Museum is situated on both sides of the road, with an overpass bridge connecting them.
There is and old (built in 1891) and new side. You will find exhibits of Natural history, Indigenous people, Culture, and the colonial & modern day history of the area. A good display of tradional wood carvings can be seen here. There is also a Wildlife exhibit, if you like looking at stuffed Animals. Its worth having a look at, and its amongst some nice gardens.
Its open daily from 9-6pm and ADMISSION IS FREE.
Address: Jalan Tun Haji Openg
At the Sarawak Cultural Centre, as well as seeing individual dance performances at their Longhouses, a spectacular show is put on in the air-conditioned mini theatre. These are wonderful to watch! The dances have meaning of which I can't remember, but they tell you what each dance represents.
Rythym, dancing, gongs, beautiful costumes, and at the end, you can join in!
Each Tribal group does their own dances.
WHEN......11.30 - 12.15pm and 4.30 - 5.15pm
These shows are included in your entrance fee, AND SHOULD NOT BE MISSED.
Address: Sarawak Cultural Village
Directions: Near the Holiday Inn Resorts.
Sarawak Cultural Village
The Cultural Village is located on a 17acre site, approx 40mins from Kuching, near the Holiday Inn Resorts.
Over the large area are seven different ethnic villages. You will see their style of home and get to learn about the different ethnic groups in Sarawak.
Go inside and have a look, in one, we were able to taste what they were cooking.
When enough people are there, they will put on a small dance performance for you.
The seven different Ethnic groups represented here are:
Bidayuh Longhouse....Iban Longhouse... Penan Hut.............Orang Ulu Longhouse........Melanau Rumah Tingii.......Malay house....... Chinese house.
OPEN from 9 - 5.15pm daily
ADMISSION IN 2009 ......Adults 60rm Children 30rm
6 years and under are FREE
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit here. It gave us knowledge on the Ethnic groups and we enjoyed this experience.

civic centre lookout tower
We took a taxi for a short ride to the Civic Centre. Here, you go up the lift in the tower for great views all over the city, and its free!!
Nice views are had in all directions. You get a good view of Mount Sentubong.
Address: Jalan Taman budaya
Directions: A short walk across a park to the Museum
The monument is located in the Park next to the Museum. It honours past ethnic warriors, and at the base of the monument are brass plaques/murals of the warriors.
The park is actually build on an old plot of chinese graveyard.,
The Sarawak Warrior Monument was constructed in November 29, 1990
Directions: In the park next to the Museum
This Mosque is not old by any means, having only been built in 1968, on the site of an old Mosque that was there in 1852.
They say it is one of Kuching's most striking landmarks, but when we were there, it really needed a good coat of paint. It does has nice gilded cupolas and can be seen for miles around.
Entrance is not allowed during Prayer times, but other times you are welcome to go inside as long a you are repectfully dressed, and remember to remove your shoes.
Address: Jalan Market Street
Dragon boat at sunset
Unfortunately, we were a little early to see the Sarawak Regatta.
It is Kuching's top boat-racing event, and includes 15 different race categories.
Traditional Chinese dragon boats, along with different tribal boats belonging to the Malay's..... Perahu Balok, Melanau's..... Traditional Boats, Orang Ulu's.... Haruk Adang , Usung..... Tingang, Bidayuh's.... Arud Diak/Tikura and Ibans..... Perahu Bidar (Perahu Pengayau), what a sight this must be! WE saw all these Tribal people at the Sarawak Cultural Village.
The Sarawak Regatta is an annual event held at the Kuching Waterfront at the Sarawak River.
Check the website for when it is being held next year..... usually around July/August.
At least we did see every evening, the Dragon Boat crews out on the River practising. Then, one night, they had a race between 6 different crews, nearly as good as the "real thing"
Easier walking at Bako
Not all the trails at Bako require a good level of fitness.
After having our lunch, we headed in the opposite direction to our 1st trek, and here we found a trail that had Board walks to walk on through the jungle. When it did emerge onto track, it wasn't hill and quite easy walking.
We saw some Birds and a Squirrel on this track
Directions: Standing on the beach facing the National Park, head to the right for an easier trail, or more demanding trails.
Had to clamber up here!
This was the trail that we went on with our guide. After leaving the park headquarters you head to the Mangrove area, then into the Jungle.
This takes you to a well worn path, which was slippery in places, very uneven, and in places help was needed by each other to get up some steep inclines. (no tree roots to hang on to!)
The Trail, depending on your level of fitness & agility may be difficult.
And it depends on your age too, the younger and more agile, the easier you would find it!
In the Jungle, the perspiration was running off us, be aware that it is a little demanding, and it is very hot and humid.
REMEMBER TO TAKE WATER WITH YOU!
It took about and hour or more, as we stopped and looked at plants and Proboscis monkeys, then at a cliff top which had some nice views before reaching a small secluded beach.
We both enjoyed this trail, it wasn't rushed, when we saw something we stopped, and it was good having a quide to point out what we would have otherwise missed!
