Sandakan Sabah

To reach Sandakan, we caught and Air Asia flight from Kota Kinabalu.

The flight is short and quite scenic, especially looking over the ocean and seeing all the islands and the coral reefs.

We were met at the airport and taken to the Sepilok Nature resort where we were staying, and then in the afternoon we were taken on a city tour which was ireally nteresting.

We visited a water village where we were taken into one of the homes for a look, it was quite nice inside, different to what I expected.

The next day, we went to the see the Orangutans which is a short walk from our accommodation. A big male and two five year olds were hanging around. To view them, you stand on an open platform and watch them being fed and getting up to their antics, quite funny to watch!

A lot of people go to see them, so in peak season, it would be packed!

Later on, we left by boat for our trip up the Kinabatangan river.
We departed from the jetty in Sandakan, crossed the ocean and headed into the Kinabatangan river. It wasn't look before we had our 1st close up encounter of a male Proboscis monkey.

Sukau Lodge, which is basic but to be expected , was our overnight accommodation. Late afternoon and another boat trip, this time up the Menanggul river, where we saw lots of monkeys, snake, and hornbills along this quiet river.
On the way back in the early morning, we saw dozens of Proboscis monkeys.

This was a very enjoyable trip, and one I could quite easily do again!

This looks like a very interesting place. We have been to Kota Kinabalu but did not make it here. I'll have to add it to our to do list. It's a long one. All the best, Irene

Will be there in May...hopefully the water won't be that rough as we plan to do a river cruise as well. How many days did you spend in the Sandakan area?

Nice page Dee, but after reading your ferry report and rough sea on return I would have to go alone. Maybe back to Kuching, safer waters.

This page brought back fond memories for me. The river cruise sounded very interesting. Nice splurge on accommodations.

Sounds like a very organized and productive tour. [the boat trip back sounded horrid though]. Seeing the monkey and orangutan was great. The description of the home you visited at the water village was excellent.

Interesting tips on the water village, the Orang-Utan Rehabilitation Centre and the Menanggul River cruise. Sounds like you had a fine time except maybe for the return journey on the boat trip.

Thanks for visiting my page and rating. Wow your Proboscis monkey photo is so closed up. I could not even get it's face as it's a very shy creature. :-)

Such an exotic spot to visit. Enjoyed reading about the water village, the Buddhist temples, getting to see an orangutan in the wild. Great stuff!
