This city has had a few name changes...............
First of all, is was named "Api" then "Jessleton" then "Api" again, when
the Japanese army captured it.
During the WW11, it was nearly demolished, with only three buildings
left standing after the bombings.
On 16th September, 1963, the area of North Borneo became known as
Sabah, and in 1968, the city was renamed again to "Kota Kinabalu"
Malaysia day is celebrated on 16th September.
We flew into Kota Kinabalu from Brunei, only a 20 min flight with Brunei Airlines, but very a very expensive one~!
We stayed at the Beverley Hotel, this was a very good choice, an excellent
hotel, we had a balcony and nice views from our room.
Kota Kinabalu is a small city with some good cheap shopping centres, and
if you can't find what you want, then there are markets to go to.
The Gaya street markets were excellent, plenty of choice here!
There are lots of upmarket resorts, some with beautiful golf courses, nice
beaches, coral fish, and great countryside.
The islands off the coast, are nice for a day visit.
We visited a couple and thoroughly enjoyed our time on both of them.
We also hired a car, and went for a drive in the countryside, another
interesting day, as we happened to see the 1st Rafflesia flower in bloom
for the year.
We visited the Head Hunters village, the Museum and so many other
places, in all, we had a great time in Kota Kinabalu!
.
- In a nutshell:A nice place for a holiday

Hi Dee, I am from Papar, a small town 30-minutes away from KK. U did cover almost everywhere of KK, wonderful pages. I used to go to those islands during school holiday.. : )) tq
sorry, what website has the airport shuttle/taxi rates? thanks.
This sounds like a great place to visit, though I'm sure it must have unnerving to discover that headhunting didn't end as long ago as you had thought.
Dee, fantastic page witrh awesome photos. Sitting at the Kota Kinabalu waterfront and watching the world and the ships pass by sounds tempting to me. The Revolving Restaurant is probably also well worth a try.
Enjoyed your view of Kota Kinabulu and your Tips. Strangely apt to come across the war memorials at time of Remembrance.
Great tips, Dee. After reading them I see we missed several things that I would like to do. We must go back.
Another top notch page with interesting tips that contain valuable and helpful information. The photographs were excellent.
Been building some new pages, but you've saved me lots of time... nearly everything I have to say has been written by you already! Thanks for sharing
Since it is snowing again here I decided to visit some place warm = I enjoyed the virtual tour Thanks
Very interesting page Dee. I like the sound of the islands, especially Mamutik, and the Head Hunters' village would fascinate me too. Did you buy a rabbit as souvenir?!!
