Berchtesgaden is a small, pretty, historic town located in Bavaria and surrounded on three sides by the Austrian border.
It is only 30kms from Salzburg, Austria.
Located in a valley,surrounded by high mountains called Untersberg in the North, Obersalzberg in the east and further south by the Watzmann, this area is known for its salt mines.
Now days, it is known for the where Adolf Hitler, had his summer getaway at Eagle's Nest.
As I wandered this delightful little Village, I wondered how many people do stop and have a look at the Village, and how many just head straight to the Eagle's Nest with out stopping.
We stopped, and I'm glad we did, as this was a really nice village.

You would think all tourist coaches would have nice clean windows, but they don't!

A very nice page which I came across by chance.
I'm one of those crazy people who usually hike up to the top of the Eagle's Nest.
Great pics and info! I was thinking about going here this year. Reckon you could take a pushchair to the Eagle's Nest or should we wait a couple of years until our son can walk it? :)
B-gaden is one of the highlights of Germany. Their are a lot of great hikes in the mountains to the south - Watzmannn, the Jenner area and the Steinernes Meer - and to the north - the Untersberg. A short skip away from teh sound of salzburg, but another World indeed. Plus, the beer is not half bad. Fine insights into this great area.
Another place I nearly saw in my 2009 trip. Wonderful streets, don't know about that dog though!
I was in the neighborhood last year but the weather was crappy so i decided against trying to go see this. The scenery is spectacular
an interesting page that brings back a lot of great memories ! Eagles nest is such a great place of history & great mountain-scenery !
