A road in Belize

...Because This Is Belize

I traveled to Belize through my school along with two friends. We spent about 3 weeks on the mainland in Santa Elena and San Ignacio (in the Cayo District). We spent our last week at Caye Caulker.

Rice and beans with stewed chicken is a traditional Belizean dish that I really enjoyed. I had to cook for myself. So when I didn't eat out, I ate a lot of oatmeal, cereal, and hot dogs (these are always cheap and easy to make).

Cayo District

We visited several Mayan Ruins. These included Caracol, Xunantunich, and Cahal Pech. Caracol is one of the largest Mayan cities and it once conquered Tikal, which is in neighboring Guatamala. In the Cayo District, we also went Ultra Lite Flying, visited the Belize Zoo, swimming at Big Rock and Rio Frio Pools, and we visited Rio Frio Cave. Rio Frio Cave is a cave that has two mouths. It's not extremely large, which means that there was no real wildlife there - which means that I was willing to go inside. The Belize Zoo has a more natural feel to it than other zoos I have visited. At times you feel as if you are truly in the rain forest.

Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker has a completely different feel from the Cayo District. This place is obviously meant for tourists who enjoy resort style vacations. There are opportunities for spa like treatments (which I could not afford), scuba diving, and crocodile hunting. While there, I ate a lot, went snorkeling, lounged in hammocks, and went sailing.

Pros:"People live life slowly, the people are extremely friendly, and you can enjoy yourself on a cheap budget."
Cons:"The men tend to be very flirtatious and make lots of comments. You may feel a little uncomfortable if you are traveling alone as a single female in areas that are not frequently visited by tourists."
In A Nutshell:"What they is true... It's an undiscovered jewel"
