Before the War

These pictures were taken in 1976 and can barely evoke the
sense of enchantment we had of the place. The stark beauty
of the Hindu Kush mountain range, the village homes made out
of mud,pitched tent Camel caravans in the distance, the quaint
Capital of Kabul (pronounced "cobble"), all these sights delighted.

Although I have never felt when traveling that cultures should
remain in the 5th century for my personal curiousity as a tourist
I couldn't help but think that this culture without a single shred
of any kind of modernization had anything to learn from us.Life
was hard for sure and it was not uncommon to come across young
children wise beyond their years....still

They just seemed too happy!

Of course during
the war the country was leveled and I have no idea what it
looks like now except to note most of these buildings and
vistas no longer exist.

This is a picture of the Mosque of Herat as it was then.....

Fantastic page. Afghanistan in the 1970s must have looked a lot better than Afghanistan now. Great photos.
