In 1992-1993 I worked as an au pair in Torino in order to learn italian. At that time there were very few tourists visiting the city. Lately I've heard that this is starting to change, but Torino is still one of the few large cities in Italy where tourists feel like a minority. Torino is very well situated at the river Po with the Italian Riviera to the south, the french border to the west, the Alps to the north and Milan to the east. Torino was Italy's capital city when the country was first united at the end of the 19th century. Because of this the center of the city is very grand with the Royal Palace and the broad main streets. Torino has also kept some traces from the roman period. I'll add more, just have to remember all the old names again :o) |
