Some say it is impossible to see all there is to see in Italy even if you devote a lifetime to the project. They may have a point: Italy is incredibly rich in sights and is one of the most exciting spots on earth. Even to speak of Italy as one country may not be fully justified. The northern alpine regions and Sicilia are worlds apart. Italy has been a unified country for only 140 years and if you visit only one area you will certainly not get a realistic picture of this diverse country.
I've already been to Italy seven times - my latest trip being that to Venice this September. Without the slightest exaggeration I can say that the more I get of Italy the more I love the place. Of course there is pizza and red wine and renaissance palaces that immediately come to my mind when I think of the country but I am always amazed at how much more there is. From the grand piazzas of Roma to the tiniest backstreet in Palermo Italy is a most pleasant assault on all the senses. This country is definitely one of the most captivating places on this planet.
So if you have the chance grab a copy of Lonely Planet's Italy book and hit the road.
