Lausanne, best known as the Olympic Capital for being the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee, rather as the capital of the count of Vaud- is one of the cities located around lake Léman, in French-speaking Switzerland. It was built over three hills which are connected by three bridges: that's the reason why walking throughout Lausanne is, literally, going up and down :)
It can be divided in three main areas:
1) la vieille ville (old town), located in the upper part, and where public buildings have settled right now: the Hotel de Ville, la Prefecture, le Grand Hôpital, la Cathédrale de Notre Dame and the churches of St. Laurent and St. Francois, to mention some of the most important. All these constructions were erected between 1270 and 1700.
2) la ville moderne (modern town), located in the lower side, has been built after 1850 when the limits of the city overturned the medieval walls that surrounded the old town. The best expressions of this part of the city are the Georgette District, the Theatre Municipal, and the Palace of Rumine.
3) Ouchy: it's Lausanne's lakeside resort area. It has impressive parks and colorful walking areas, ideal for long promenades next to lake Léman.
