The canals in Amsterdam are beautifull, and we have a lot of them. A lot of people only look to the canal and forget to look up. Where the most beautifull part is of Amsterdam: the roofs of the houses. There are still a lot of old houses, most of them are in the center and on the sites of the canals. Also very nice in the evening! Take a walk, this is the only way that you have the time to look up and make a lot of pictures. For handicapted people it is less easy to walk next to the canals or cross over the bridges over the canals. The streets are small and often busy, sometimes cars are parked next to the canal. The bridges are in a bow, so you have to climb a little bit and descend. The streets are made of bricks, the sidewalk is small.

Other things in the neighberhood of the Tropical Museum: * Oosterpark (see picture): a big park behind the museum. * Dappermarkt: this year choosen as the best market of Amsterdam, better than the Albert Cuijpmarket! Cross the big street in front of the museum, walk about 2 minutes. * Eat of Eden (see picture): a good coffee-house with a terras, where you can sit comfortable and drink a cup of coffee, wine or eat something. Just on the other side of the street, a little to the right. * hotel NH Tropen (see picture), in case you want to stay in this good neighberhood. It's directly on the leftside of the museum.

The Dappermarkt is a typical local market, especially people from the neaberhood come here, and me also. Because Amsterdam is an international city, this is also a International market. In this neaberhood (Oost) live also a lot of Turkish people, who come to the market too. That makes it a more interesting place. What is sold at the market are: clothes (cheap), food and drinks, shoes, and also other produkts. The market is everyday except sundays. Open till 16.00-17.00 o'clock. After that, I would advise you to go to Kervan, a Turkish restaurant (cheap and good) in the middle of the market. Or have just a cup of good cappucino over there. From the terras, or from inside the restaurant you have a good view to the people clearing away their stalls. And: to the herons, this big birds have found a place for a good meal in the city. They know exactly at what time their meal will be ready to catch. They sit on the houses and come down as soon as possible. There are allways laying a lot of fish which has been throw away. And they enjoy it! The Dappermarkt has last year (2007) iven the award for the best market of the Netherlands.
