"angkot", not comfortable, but it fits Use the public transport, it is much more fun! It may be less comfortable but you'll meet the locals. This picture is made in an "angkot" in Magelang, Java, Indonesia. |
still traditional way of life I like to see the places where the comman people live, and where most tourists don't like to come. I like to see the daily live of the locals. I always try to make contact with them, so I always have to learn -at least a little- of the language. But it is worth it! I made this picture in a little village around Batusangkar, Sumatra, Indonesia. The women are walking back home, the one on the left is carrying wood, necesarry to cook her meals. |
a smile and "hallo" is enough Just a smile and say "hallo" (or "selamat pagi/siang/sore/malam" in Indonesia) is enough to make contact. In Indonesia it will also help when they see your camera. Most of them would like you to make a picture of them. Don't forget to ask for their adresses and sent them the picture later! This picture is made in a little village nearby Magelang, Java, Indonesia. |

a lovely tea and lunch visit This is in Maze Köy, a little village in Capadocia, Turkey. Not easy to reach with public transportation. We just took a little walk, and ended up to be invited for lunch. This are the lovely Turkish people, with their house on the background. The job of the men is to cut wood. The house was very basic, the toilet was outside, a little place with only a deep hole in the ground. But everything was very clean. We ate in the house, sitting on matrasses on the ground. They baked us a bread outside the house. The people are still very patient, so we had to wait a long time for the tea and the food. We stayed there for a few hours, and tried to have conversation with a little Turkish from me and a lot of friendly smiles. |

walking around in the city Sometimes the naberhood is poor, like this one in Mexico-city, close to a jail where I visited a Dutch women. It may looks poor, and dirty sometimes, but the people are nice. I like the old houses, broken or incomplete, or made from everything they could find. I like stones, stones used for houses and rocks from a mountain. I also like to make stone, my objects made of clay are heated in an oven to become stone as well. |
dirty coffee The way I like to travel, it is not easy to find a place to drink a cup of coffee. This place in Mexico-city was good enough for me, but the coffee was not drinkable. I tried to drink it, but it smells awfull. Not the coffee, but the cup. I think it was washed in very dirty water. So .... no coffee this time. |
lava-stones I like lava-stones. A lot. I always look for a vulkan not so high, so I can climb a little bit over the stones. They are beautifull! I always take a few of them to bring them home. Once I had to open my bag for the customs at the airport. They saw on the t.v. a big black spot in my bag and wanted to see what is was. I had to open my bag and the customofficer smelt the stone (she was afraid it was some kind of narcotica). She agreed it was a beautifull stone. And the best souvenir for me! I always have a heavy bag when I come home. |
