Oldenburg is often named "Oldenburg in Oldenburg", the latter referring to the surrounding county. This double naming may seem strange but is essential to identify the town, as there is another Oldenburg in northern Germany: Oldenburg in Holstein, situated northeast of Hamburg close to the Baltic Sea coast and the island of Fehmarn.

| | Even if Oldenburg doesn't have any tourist attractions one would cross oceans for, it is worth a stop and a stroll if you are in the area.
I came over from Emden for a day to do some research on Oldenburg's main church (which indeed made it into my book; note the spires in the background of the photo left). Then I explored the town centre and the beautiful palace gardens.
I liked the place. The small city has that certain inviting flair.

| | The town centre has not been affected much by World War II bombings. Post-war modernism has done more damage than the war.
The town's appearance was mostly formed in the 19th century. There are, however, a couple of older buildings left, like the palace, Lamberti church, the Lappan tower, some renaissance houses. The pedestrian streets of the centre follow the old winding ground plan and are enjoyable for walking and shopping. |

Good job of showing these | Nemorino Fri May 22, 2009 14:30 UTC Hi Kathrin, thanks for the nice introduction to Oldenburg. Glad the Lamberti church made it into your book. I went to Oldenburg once for a conference, but was too busy to see very much. Hope to go again this summer. | gkitzmil Sun Feb 15, 2009 14:20 UTC There is an Oldenburg, Indiana, too! Founded by Germans in 1837. I feel the same way about it. A wonderful place to relax |
