"Dürnstein, the Jewel of the Wachau" Dürnstein by Kathrin_E

Dürnstein Travel Guide: 70 reviews and 325 photos

Among many pretty wine villages in the Wachau valley, Dürnstein has the prettiest panorama. The blue steeple is the town's landmark, together with the castle ruin on the rock high above the town.

I had not expected neither the landscape nor the town to be that beautiful...

We visited Dürnstein as part of the Wachau excursion during the Vienna pre-Euromeet 2010. From Melk we took a cruise boat along the Danube, a very pleasant way of travelling and enjoying the landscape views with castles and villages. We explored the old town, saw the Augustine convent and the famous church with the blue steeple, then had lunch and tasted some local wine on the terrace of a Heuriger.

Once I went past Dürnstein in a foldable kayak (a long time ago) but didn’t stop there. It looks like a nice place to visit. – See you next Saturday at the Glühwein meeting!
