Some treasures of the Motor Museum

The Motor Museum sort of put on an unplanned, free open-air show for me when I passed there... They were loading a number of their vintage cars and motorbikes on trucks to transport them - no idea where, so I was able to have a close look at them standing out on the quai. Thanks Motor Museum!

Hotel in High Street

High Street still shows the same picture as around 1900 - along more or less the whole street, the Victorian houses that were built 100 years ago are preserved and well maintained.

Round House is the oldest building in Western Australia, built as a prison shortly after the founding of the colony in 1829. The building was erected in 1830-31 on a rock on the ocean shore. Actually the building is decagonal, not round...

A tunnel underneath serves as passage to Bathers Beach. It was built by the Fremantle Whaling Company in 1837 and is thus known as the Whalers Tunnel.

Prison cells in Round House

Round House is the oldest building in Western Australia, built as a prison shortly after the founding of the colony in 1829. The building, erected in 1830-31, served as a prison till the 1990s. Shortly after it was opened as a museum.

Round House is open daily from 10.30 to 15.30. A group of volunteers will be there to show you round, explain and answer your questions.

Round House is the oldest building in Western Australia, built as a prison shortly after the founding of the colony in 1829. The building, erected in 1830-31, served as a prison till the 1990s. Shortly after it was opened as a museum.

The platform on the seaside behind Round House offers a nice view of the ocean, the port and the islands. Its main purpose, however, is signalling the exact time to the ships in the harbour.
From 1900 to 1937, each day at 1pm the cannon was fired and a time ball dropped. Since 1998 a volunteer group has re-enacted the ceremony.

Immigrants arriving in the port

Two people standing on the quay, looking lost and helpless, not sure where to go, what to do. A small suitcase contains their worldy belongings. So here we are, what now?

The bronze statue recalls the many immigrants who arrived in the port of Fremantle over decades. It catches that moment of uncertainty, hope for a better future mixed with homesickness, when first setting foot on the Australian shore.

According to Perth's isolated location, the port in Fremantle is its door to the world. The container has become, like everywhere in overseas trade, the prevalent method of transport. Among the huge container vessels you may, however, spot an oldie like the pretty sailing ship "Leeuwin".

Maritime Museum

The new Maritime Museum on the tip of the river mouth has only been opened a few years ago. The white building which recalls the shape of sails now dominates the skyline in the port.
The upstairs terrace towards the waterside is a fine spot to observe the ships entering and leaving the port.

The museum hosts an interesting collection about ships and seafaring, it's worth going in - see separate tip.
