Local Customs: GUILDS: Glottertäler Triibl

Glottertal, a small valley northeast of Freiburg, is mostly famous for "Schwarzwaldklinik" ("Black Forest Hospital"), a TV series that was popular in the 1990s. The valley is also known for its excellent red wines, mostly Spätburgunder/Pinot noir, named "Glottertaler Rote Bur". The Glottertal jester guild refers to the local wine making tradition. The Triibl with their cute masks are vines or wine spirits. Each of them carries a grape made of small bells.

Local Customs: GUILDS: Aulendorf, Eckhexen and Schnörkele

Aulendorf's Fasrnacht guild is dominated by the Eckhexen, colourful witches. They are accompanied by a wagon on which they burn I don't know what (better not ask) to create as much stink and smoke as possible (photos 1-4). After the war two other types of figures were added: Schnörkele (photo 5) and Fetzle, two friendly figures in bright colours. They are supposed to personify the approaching spring - their inventors were still influenced by the (proved wrong) interpretation of the Fastnacht as driving winter away.

Local Customs: GUILDS: Narhalla Achern

Achern's Dreizipfeleshansele got their name from the three-pointed hat. Their red and white costume resembles the bajazzo in the Italian carnevale and commedia dell'arte. This type of costume derives from 18th and 19th century carnival traditions and is less 'alemannic'.

Oversized May beetles come to life in Dellmensingen, a village in the Rhine plain that seems to be plagued by these insects frequently. The guild is young, it was founded in 1992. It took the cockchafer as model to create this imaginative and funny Häs.

Renchen's Kibbl-Schisser ("bucket sh1tters") are a creation of the 1980s. These cute blond guys carry along a huge wooden bucket on wheels. Look at their backsides and you'll understand the signification of the bucket.

Local Customs: GUILDS: Geeße, Philippsburg
Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet] |
The Geeße (goats) guild has some problems among the associations of alemannic Fastnacht: their village Philippsburg is situated too far north, outside the traditional Fastnacht region, and cannot be member of one of their districts. So their position is somewhat unclear. Anyway, they have a cute animal Häs worth a presentation.

Local Customs: GUILDS: Grusilochzottli, Lahr

A weird character with a weird and untranslatable name... Lahr's Grusilochzottli guild has been founded in 1937. They adopted an old legend about spirits spooking around one old tower. Unfortunately the guild still describes Fastnacht as "driving away winter spirits" according to the 1930's interpretation. The Häs of the green and brown Grusilochzottli with its large headcover is unique.

Local Customs: GUILDS: Korkenzieher, Lahr

Lahr's Korkenzieher (corkscrews) refer to wine making traditions in the surrounding Ortenau. This region at the foot of the Black Forest hills is famous for its reds. The corks on jacket and headcover are real. Making the Häs is hard work. Not only does every single cork have to be sewn onto it by hand. First, one has to empty enough bottles to collect several hundreds of corks... (No, seriously, I think they buy new corks to make it but of course it inspires imagination.) Each of them carries an oversize corkscrew, the handle of which is made from vine wood.

Singen's Blumenzupfer (flower pickers) are happy gardeners with flowery heads. Some are big flowers of different varieties, like sunflowers, asters and gerbera, others wear wooden masks ornated with little flowers.

Local Customs: GUILDS: Suggentäler Schreckli

Suggental is a short and narrow valley off Waldkirch which is surrounded by forests. Feral pigs that live in these forests seem to have inspired the design of the Suggentäler Häs. The figure is simply named Schreckli , which translates to something like "scary little thing".
