"Annaberg" Annaberg-Buchholz by Kathrin_E

Annaberg-Buchholz Travel Guide: 64 reviews and 475 photos

View of Annaberg from Pöhlberg.

Annaberg-Buchholz, the double town, is the hub and main town in the central part of the Ore Mountains. Its history dates back to the silver rush around 1500 when several mining towns were founded in this area, among them both Annaberg and Buchholz. The part that is of most interest to visitors, however, is Annaberg, and that's what this page focuses upon - hence the title.

Annaberg became incredibly rich within a few years of its existence. The huge church of St Anna, a marvel of Saxon late gothic, tells of the town's wealth and ambition.

I made Annaberg my base for almost a week to explore the town's sights and also other places along the Zschopau valley and in the mountains, like Augustusburg, Marienberg, Oberwiesenthal. The Czech border is close, and I also took the chance to do a day trip to Karlovy Vary. I could have done with even more time in this area.

So this is where Adam Ries used to live! Actually I never knew that he was a real person, I thought his name was just part of that proverbial expression in German. I?d love to visit his museum. Also I?d like to see the mining museum and those four paintings by Hans Hesse that show how a mine around 1500 worked. And it?s great that the huge water-powered hammer from the 17th century is still fully functional!

I thought it was a very enjoyable, easy walk up to Pöhlberg! ;-) Excellent page with brilliant pics here. They did not charge for the photo permit in Manufaktur der Träume? Oy!
