Since there are already countless pages on the 'normal' sights of Berlin, I'm dedicating mine to a special topic. This page is actually the side product of two crazy business days: I needed photos of a number of churches all over Berlin for a book on protestant church architecture.

The first day involved 18 churches, a day ticket for public transport Zone AB, nevertheless uncounted kilometres of walking and horrible blisters. Yes Berlin is huge...
The second day involved 11 churches in Berlin plus 2 in Potsdam, a day ticket for public transport zone ABC, again several kilometres of walking, carrying an extra pair of shoes to be able to change halfway.
Result: 361 acceptable photos, and ruined feet thanks to the blisters achieved on day 1.

A few of these churches are well known and often visited. Others, among them the most fascinating examples of 19th and early 20th century church architecture I've ever seen, are far, far off any beaten or unbeaten path. Architecture and church enthusiasts are invited to share my discoveries.

A remark about the confession: Most of the churches I present here are "protestant" or "evangelical" - which is the same. In fact, they are "evangelical-united". In Berlin, like in most of Germany (though not everywhere), today's protestant or evangelical church is the product of the union between Lutherans and Calvinists in the early 19th century.
Prussia became biconfessional in 1613 when Elector Johann Sigismund converted to Calvinism but was wise enough not to force the whole Lutheran population of his country to join. Since then two evangelical confessions and churches existed side by side. 200 years later both sides came to the conclusion that they had more in common than differences and decided to unite and form one "evangelical" church. The "Prussian Union" was confirmed in 1818.

The bombet-out ruin of the late 19th century Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche on Kurfürstendamm with its modern supplements became the symbol of the isolated Western part of the city. In 1987 the West German post issued this stamp to honour Berlin's 750th anniversary depicts the "Hollow Tooth", as the locals nicknamed the ruin, front and center.
