Door County - The Midwest USA Version of Cape Cod

Think of Lighthouses and a lot of travelers in the USA think about Maine or Cape Code on the East Coast, but the country with the most lighthouses in the USA is Door County with 10 different lighthouse scattered around this county located between Lake Michigan and Green Bay (its the little pinky part of your right hand if you look at a map of Wisconsin).

How Did Egg Harbor Get Its Name?

There are several stories about how Egg Harbor got its name, but the following appears to be the real one: Back in 1825 Mrs. Elizabeth Baird recorded the following in her journal on June 23rd. She wrote that there was a battle among a six-boat trading flotilla. Mrs. Baird saw eggs flying in the air, some of which struck her own head. The leader tried to stop the battle, but the fun was "too fierce to be readily given up." The great battle stopped only for want of ammunition, and the men "laughed until exhausted." The next morning the battlefield was so strewn with egg shells that before leaving shore, speeches befitting the occasion were made, and the spot was formally christened Egg Harbor.

Door County is a place I would like to visit - especially in August when it's so hot here in Augusta, GA!
